Dance - 2017-2018

The School of Fine Arts is a ministry of First Baptist Church. We offer classes in dance, music, art, and acting. All classes are taught from a Christian perspective and use a variety of traditional and innovative methods to encourage students in developing their God-given talents.

The purpose of the dance department is to provide quality dance instruction for all ages,

2 years – adult. In addition to teaching technique and skill in such a way as to enable each student to attain his/her maximum potential, it is our objective to teach discipline of body, mind, grace and poise, creativity, rhythm, and appreciation for the beauty of art.

Curriculum/Classes Offered
Mommy & Me—A 30-minute class for 2-3 year olds (must turn 2 by Sept. 1) with their moms or other guardians.  These young students  will be introduced to dance in a fun setting that also provides time for bonding between parent and child.
Creative Dance (previously Intro to Dance) - A class for 3s (must turn 3 by Sept. 1) and new 4s. This class engages young students as they learn about the elements of dance: body, space, time, force, along with “The Brain Dance,” basic motor skills, and classroom etiquette.
Pre-Ballet— A class for returning 4s (must turn 4 by Sept. 1 and have had at least one previous year in dance) and new 5s.  This class is structured similarly to Creative Dance, while introducing some new movements to provide challenge for students.
Pre-Ballet/Pre-Tap—A one-hour class that includes all of the elements of pre-ballet, while also introducing young students to tap. Same age requirements as pre-ballet.
Ballet—Each of our seven levels of ballet allow students to learn progressively challenging movements and terminology with a strong emphasis on clean technique. Ballet helps students to develop strength, discipline, grace, musicality, and flexibility and is a great foundation for other styles of dance.
Pointe—Older ballet students may be allowed to take pointe classes. Teacher placement required in the three levels of pointe classes. Students must participate in ballet technique classes at least two days per week in order to take pointe classes.
Tap 1/Jazz 1—A one-hour class for  5-7 year olds (5-year-old students MUST have had one previous year of dance training—new 5s should enroll in pre-ballet/pre-tap). Class will equally divide time between introducing students to tap and jazz.
Tap— Tap allows students to develop rhythm, musicality, and coordination.  Students learn increasingly difficult steps and combinations in each of the four levels.
Jazz—These upbeat classes allow students to learn increasingly challenging  choreography  in each of the three levels.
Liturgical  - Ballet Level 3  and up- Class focuses on using dance in worship. Dancing to hymns and worship music, students will use elements from ballet and modern to learn praise-focused choreography throughout the year, while also learning scripture.
Modern—Intermediate Ballet 1 and up—Teacher approval required. Contemporary dance class, incorporating the elements of fall and rebound, contraction, use of torso and floor/seated movement. Partner work and improv will be introduced. The techniques of Doris Humphry, Erik Hawkins, Martha Graham and Doug Varone will be used.
Acro— A class that merges dance and tumbling. First–level acro students will learn specific gymnastic tricks within a dance including forward/backward rolls, handstand, cartwheel, front/back walkovers, as well as splits and other stretching/conditioning. Second-level students will learn more advanced movements, including back handsprings, tick tock, back tucks, and group lifts.
Christian Hip-Hop— Students will learn how to use beats in music to create smooth and sharp rhythms and dance moves.

Dance classes begin Monday, August 21, 2017. All dance students will be provided with a calendar for the 2017-2018 year. Please refer to this calendar or our website  when you have a question concerning whether a dance class meets on a particular day.  We  observe the Decatur City School schedule for Labor Day, fall break, Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, and spring break, and Memorial Day. The School of Fine Arts also observes the Decatur City Schools System Policy with regard to inclement weather. If schools close for an emergency, The School of Fine Arts will close.
